HDV cams, any good buys out there

The world's first consumer 1080i high definition camcorder, was the Sony Handycam HDR-FX1E, and is a good buy. A revolution in form and function, the HDR-FX1E allows you to play and record interlaced high definition video at resolutions up to 1440 x 1080 for professional quality video with vivid colors and striking detail. It even offers the ability to switch to standard DV recording and playback as the situation warrants.

The HDR-FX1E features the Real-time HD Codec Engine, which offers professional-level MPEG2 video compression, and 14bit HD DXP (Digital Extended Processor) for increased processing speed. Images are captured on three chip Advanced HAD CCD system that provides increased detail and improved video performance without the color bleeding found in other system. Optical capabilities include a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 12x optical zoom and Super SteadyShot image stabilization.

The HDR-FX1E offers an unprecedented amount of control to the user, including manual zoom, focus, and iris control. Picture Profile allows the user to create a number of preset video modes for a variety of shooting settings. Composing shots is easier than even with the 3.5" precision hybrid SwivelScreen LCD display and the extra-large electronic viewfinder. Cheapest price I have found is £1538.99

Hello everyone ,

I have just been reminded by the secretary of Edinburgh Cine and Video Society, that the 2007 Choice of Clubs competition is looming! He has been compiling the viewing schedule for early next year, and has DCC down for 24 January, which means our entry(!?) has to be with him in South Queensferry by the end of the second week of the new year at the latest,ie 13 or 14 January. Vic reminded me the movie does not have to have been shot in the past year, it can be from any time. So those of you with past masterpieces which have never been shown, dust them down and send them to your club secretary.

My Dream Machine from Canon

Professional Versatility for 1080i HD

The XL H1 is the new flagship HD (High Definition) camcorder of Canon’s digital video range. With high resolution 3CCD 1.67 Megapixel imaging and a new, dedicated 20x zoom Canon HD VIDEO lens, the XL H1 delivers stunning true-to-life video images in native 16:9 widescreen.

High Definition

As HDTV becomes a broadcast reality across Europe, the XL H1 is a tool for professional videographers looking to make the upgrade from SD to HD production. Capturing 1080/50i HD images with an additional progressive shooting mode (25f), the camcorder features new DIGIC DV II image processing, with support for the export of uncompressed HD and SD video, via SDI, alongside compressed capture – to HDV master media and miniDV tapes. Additional 60i, 30f and 24f capture is available through an upgrade option.

20x Zoom HD Video Lens

A new XL interchangeable HD lens combines high performance fluorite elements with improved Super Range Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The lens has a 35mm equivalency of 38.9mm to 778mm in 16:9 mode and a f/1.6 to f/3.5 aperture. It incorporates two independent ND filters (1/6 and 1/32), focus and zoom position presets, distance display data readout and a built-in mechanical shutter.

Studio Connectivity

Comfortable in a multi-camera environment, the XL H1 has an expanded range of connections. The camcorder provides uncompressed 4:2:2 HD at 1.485Gbps, via HD-SDI output, and features Gen lock input and LTC Time Code input/output terminals. Allowing direct capture to broadcast and video editing systems, SDI functionality brings the XL H1 in line with HD industry formats, including HDCAM and DVCPRO HD. An IEEE1394 (Firewire) input/output connection is also available.

CINE Control

In addition to the 25f progressive mode, the XL H1 can be adjusted to achieve the look of film and two dedicated CINE gammas and three colour matrix settings are available for advanced colour correction. Other manual controls that can be modified independently include knee, black stretch, master pedestal, setup level, sharpness, horizontal detail, coring, sharpness, noise reduction, colour gain, hue and master colour gain.
